Dog Friendly Office Project Point 11: Shedding Hair

In the spirit of ‘Enriching the Workplace with Your Dog" at free stitch, we started the ‘Dog Friendly Office Project’ in September 2019.

Since then, we have listened to the feedback from our customers about how their workplaces view bringing pets to work and we have created a set of guidelines for our staff who come to the office with their pets.

Through a series of blog entries, we hope to expand on and explain some of the reasoning behind the guidelines that we created in the consent form.

In our previous blog posts, we explained some of the logic behind setting the rules written in our guidelines for bringing pets to work. In our following series of blogs, we would like to focus on some of the precautions we should take while your pet is with you in the office.

In our last blog, we looked at the second point of the office guidelines; if your pet is wet or dirty due to weather conditions, please bring a towel and be sure to wipe their body and feet before entering the office’.

In this week's post, we will talk about rule 3 of the office regulations; ‘if your pet is experiencing shedding or hair loss, please have your pet wear appropriate clothing to minimize debris’.

Shedding usually happens twice a year for dogs (usually at the change of seasons) and is when old fur falls out and new fur grows in its place. Depending on the breed of dog (or cat), the amount of fur lost will vary. As many pets live indoors these days, the fur loss may not be noticeable or may not be much; on the other hand it might be more than normal for the breed due to fluctuations in air-conditioning temperature between the seasonal changes.

If a lot of fur is being shed by your pet, it is advisable to wear clothes and to brush or shampoo-wash your dog thoroughly before coming to the office. If the fur loss is significant and a lot of debris falls on the floor of the workplace, we ask our staff to refrain from bringing their pet to the office until shedding has completed.

In the next post, we will discuss point 4 of the office regulations; ‘if you need to leave the designated pet area without your pet, please leave them in a playpen or ask another member of staff to supervise your pet’.
